Square 54: Spiritual devotion (bhakti-loka)
Leela Atlas team · Updated
Square 54 in Leela is Spiritual devotion, bhakti-loka. It holds the most important arrow on the board: the only one that leads straight to the goal, square 68, Cosmic Consciousness. Johari calls it the arrow that takes the drop to the ocean. In this game of self-knowledge, love and surrender reach further than knowledge alone.
What square 54 means
Johari describes Spiritual devotion as love of the Deity, and its arrow as the one that takes the drop to the ocean. The individual self, a drop that has wandered across the board, returns to its source. He calls it the only direct path to liberation in the game.
The Sanskrit bhakti comes from a root meaning to share in, to belong to. Devotion is not an emotion to be produced but a turning of the whole heart toward what one serves. The board makes a clear point here: the arrow of Right knowledge at 45 stops one square short of the goal, at 67, while devotion lands on 68 itself.
Square 54 is the last square of row 6, The Time of Penance, and belongs to the Ajna chakra. After the effort of austerity, the danger of violence and the cooling of water, the row ends in surrender. Johari also notes that from Earth, at 51, this square is only one throw away.
What it teaches is that the deepest movement is not taken but given. Devotion does not require perfection, only wholeheartedness. It is the quality the Gita places at the very end of its teaching. On this square, devotion is a direction of the heart.
On the board
Square 54 sits at the end of row 6, The Time of Penance, three squares above Earth at 51. No arrow or snake ends here, so a player arrives by an ordinary throw. It is the base of an arrow: a player who lands on 54 climbs at once to square 68, Cosmic Consciousness, rising from row 6 to row 8. Landing exactly on 68 ends the game.
The Bhagavad Gita and this square
In Gita 18.65 Krishna gives his final promise: fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, and you will come to Me. When Draupadi, humiliated in the assembly hall, stops defending herself and calls on Krishna with her whole being, she is held; that is the surrender this square describes.
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, and you will come to Me: Krishna's final promise. Give everything, and you will be held.
