Square 51: Earth (prithvi)

Leela Atlas team · Updated

Square 51 in Leela is Earth, prithvi in Sanskrit. Johari calls it the Great Mother and the stage on which the whole game is played. It is also where the snake from square 72, Inertia, brings back a player who passed the goal. Earth is not a punishment but a fresh starting point, three squares below Spiritual devotion.

What square 51 means

Johari describes Earth as the Great Mother, the ground that holds every being and the stage on which Leela, the divine play, unfolds. Players carried to the top of the board by arrows return here to work their way up again. The square is less about falling than about being received.

The Sanskrit prithvi names the earth element and the goddess of the earth, the broad and patient one. Earth is also the element of the first chakra, at the base of the spine. Finding it again in row 6 says something important: even near the top of the board, the player is still standing on solid ground and still has a body, a place and work to do.

Square 51 belongs to row 6, The Time of Penance, and the Ajna chakra. Johari points out that from here Spiritual devotion at 54 is only one throw of the die away. A player who returns to Earth is therefore close to the one arrow that leads straight to the goal.

What square 51 teaches is the dignity of beginning again. A return is not a failure. It is the chance to act once more, with what the earlier flight has shown you.

On the board

Square 51 sits in row 6, The Time of Penance. One snake ends here: the snake of Inertia on square 72, which brings back a player who went past 68 into the top row. A player can also arrive by an ordinary throw from below. Earth has no arrow or snake of its own, and the arrow of Spiritual devotion at 54 is just three squares ahead.

Snakes arriving here: 72 Inertia.

The Bhagavad Gita and this square

Gita 9.21 says that when merit is spent, those who tasted heaven return to the mortal world; this square treats that return as a place to act again. Yayati, who fell from heaven after boasting of his own merit, shows how pride ends the flight and how the earth receives the one who falls.

When merit is spent, those who tasted heaven return to the mortal world. Earth is not a failure but a place where you can act again.

Questions

What happens when you land on square 51 in Leela?

Square 51, Earth, is a plain square: nothing moves you up or down. You often arrive here by the snake from 72, Inertia, after passing the goal. From Earth the arrow of Spiritual devotion on 54 is three squares away, so one good throw can lead straight to 68.

Why does the snake of Inertia lead to Earth in Leela?

In Johari's reading, a player who overshoots 68 still carries karma, so inertia, tamoguna, bites and returns them to Earth. Earth is the Great Mother and the stage of the game, a place to start the climb again rather than a fall to the bottom of the board.
