# Leela Square 62: Happiness (sukh) Meaning

Square 62 in Leela is Happiness, sukh in Sanskrit, in the seventh row at the level of the crown chakra. Johari describes it as a balance of body chemistry and psyche felt very near the goal. It is a gift, often reached by the arrow of Conscience, but it carries a warning: contentment that turns into complacency calls darkness in.

## Meaning

In Johari's commentary, happiness is the natural result of a body and psyche in balance. Nothing is pulling the player in two directions; desire has quietened and the inner chemistry is at ease. This is not pleasure from an object but a settled state, and it appears high on the board, close to Cosmic Consciousness.

The Sanskrit word sukh is the everyday word for ease and well being, the opposite of dukh, suffering. Its root image is a wheel turning smoothly on its axle. Here it describes a player whose inner wheel runs true, which is why it can be reached directly from square 46, Conscience: when the inner voice is followed, life stops grinding.

The danger lies in the very next square. Square 63 is tamas, darkness, the head of the longest snake in the game. Johari reads this placement as a teaching: happiness that becomes satisfied with itself slows into inertia, and inertia mistakes itself for completion. Row 7, the Plane of Reality, is a row with three snakes and no arrows, so square 62 asks the player to enjoy the ease without resting on it. Happiness here is a place to breathe, not a place to stop.

## On the board

Square 62 is reached by count or by the arrow from square 46, Conscience, which lifts the player from the sixth row straight into the seventh. It is a plain square with no snake and no arrow leaving it, so the symbol stays and waits for the next throw. That throw matters: a one lands on 63, Darkness, and the long snake down to square 2, Illusion.

Gita 18.37 is the verse for square 62: sattvic happiness is like poison at first and nectar at the end, while rajasic happiness is the reverse. The path from the Rajasuya to the dice game shows a joy that faded because it was taken for granted.

## Questions

- What makes me happy with no conditions attached?
- Where has my contentment quietly become an excuse to stop moving?
- Which joy in my life grows over time, and which one fades as soon as I have it?

**What happens when you land on square 62 in Leela?**
Square 62, Happiness, is a plain square: nothing pushes you up or down. You rest there until your next throw. It is often reached by the arrow of Conscience from square 46. The next square, 63, is the head of the longest snake, so a throw of one from here sends you down to Illusion.

**How do you reach Happiness in Leela?**
There are two ways. You can arrive by count, moving through the seventh row, or you can land on square 46, Conscience (vivek), and ride its arrow directly up to square 62. The arrow expresses Johari's idea that listening to the inner voice brings body and mind into a balance experienced as happiness.

**Why is Happiness next to Darkness on the Leela board?**
Johari places sukh at 62 and tamas at 63 on purpose. Happiness that becomes complacent drifts into inertia, and inertia easily believes the work is finished. The neighbouring snake is a reminder that ease is a stage on the way, not the goal, which is still Cosmic Consciousness at 68.
