# Leela Square 1: Genesis (janma) Meaning

Square 1 in Leela is Genesis, janma in Sanskrit: the point of birth. Every player passes through it when the first six is thrown, before landing on square 6, Delusion. Genesis stands for the moment the wish to play binds you to karma, and the One, in Harish Johari's reading, begins to appear as many.

## Meaning

Harish Johari treats birth as entry into a karmic play. In his words, "the die is the karmic player, and the individual self a symbol." The token you place on the board is that symbol; the throws of the die are the karma that moves it. Square 1 marks the instant the symbol leaves its unborn rest and becomes a participant.

The Sanskrit janma simply means birth. Johari links it to desire: the wish to play is what ties a player to karma, and in entering the game you re-enact the old image of the One becoming many. Genesis is therefore neither good nor bad. It is the condition that makes every other square possible.

Genesis opens the first row, The Fundamentals of Being, which Johari connects with Muladhara, the root chakra at the base of the spine, and with the earth element. This row is about survival, possession and the basic passions, and it holds no arrows. Seen this way, square 1 teaches a simple point: before you ask what the game will show you, notice the desire that brought you to the board at all.

In play, Genesis is a square you pass rather than rest on. That makes it a good moment, before the first throw, to name the question you carry. Many players write it down while they wait on square 68 for their six, so that the path the symbol traces afterwards can be read against that intention.

## On the board

Square 1 is not reached by an ordinary throw. Every player begins unborn on square 68, Cosmic Consciousness, and waits for a six. The entering six moves the symbol to square 1, Genesis, and on to square 6, Delusion, where the journey properly starts. No arrow and no snake leads into square 1, and it has no arrow or snake of its own. It sits in row 1, The Fundamentals of Being.

The square is paired with Gita 2.27: birth is one turn of a long cycle, and all that is born will die and be born again. The Mahabharata episode of Karna's birth and abandonment shows how much of a life is shaped by a birth no one chose.

## Questions

- What desire am I bringing into this game?
- What would change if I saw this situation as one turn of a longer cycle?
- Which circumstances of my starting point am I still arguing with?

**What happens on square 1 in Leela?**
Square 1, Genesis, is the point of birth. When a player finally throws a six while waiting on square 68, the symbol enters the board at square 1 and is carried on to square 6, Delusion. Nothing else happens on Genesis itself: there is no arrow or snake, and later throws never bring a player back here.

**Why do you need a six to start Leela?**
In Johari's rules every player waits unborn on square 68 until a six is thrown. That six carries the symbol from Genesis to Delusion, where play begins. Many players use the waiting time to clarify the question or intention they bring to the game, and to notice their own impatience.

**What does janma mean?**
Janma is the Sanskrit word for birth. In Leela it names square 1, the entry into the karmic play. Johari reads it as the moment desire binds the self to action and consequence, so that the One begins to appear as many. It is the starting condition of the game rather than a test or a reward.
